Five Checks Before Specifying a Commercial Hybrid Inverter

A commercial hybrid inverter must match the facility’s electrical service, load profile and operating strategy—not simply the desired power rating. For EPCs, solar installers and energy-storage integrators, choosing the right platform starts with five practical checks: service voltage, PV architecture, battery power, backup requirements and future expansion. 1. Confirm the Facility Service Voltage The first decision is whether the project operates on 120/208V or 277/480V three-phase service. Smaller commercial properties may use 208V, while factories, warehouses and larger facilities commonly use 480V. The inverter must be selected for the actual service voltage and system topology. Using the wrong voltage class can complicate transformer selection, protection design, conductor sizing and interconnection approval. Before specifying equipment, confirm the utility service, available switchgear, point of interconnection and whether the protected loads operate at the same voltage. A compl...
